I have to be honest, ranking on Page One for a broad keyword phrase is almost impossible these days. Unlike way back when the Internet was young, nowadays to rank even on page one of Google for a Broad keyword phrase is something only a few of us ever achieve. And why would you want to rank highly for a Broad keyword anyway.
Broad keywords attract browsers. People who are not interested in buying anything. These people are basically looking for research material and I for one try to discourage them from visiting my websites. I want to make money from my sites and I try to provide the sorts of information buyer’s want.
I have been doing this Website Marketing thing for more years than I like to remember and in the beginning, I was like most website owners. I wanted a position one for popular keywords and I read everything I could and tried everything available to achieve this. But after reasonable results, I learnt that even with high-ranking Broad keywords, I wasn’t making any money. All my hard earned visitors were coming to my sites and then leaving to buy from other less optimised website.
I finally worked out what I was doing. I was more interested in the fame and glory of being able to rank at #1 for a Broad keyword phrase and I was getting frustrated, because I couldn’t let go of this. That was until I came across an article written by a then well known Internet Marketer. I won’t mention his name, but he wrote that many webmasters had made the same mistake I had.
The money isn’t in the Broad Keyword Phrases; they’re in the Longtail keywords. Here’s and example of a Broad Keyword Phrase and a Longtail Keyword Phrase. And yes, I have written about this in the past, but something special has happened that takes this process further than I have ever done before and I want to share it with you.
A Broad Keyword Phrase is a single keyword or a combination of keywords that describe something. For example this is a broad keyword phrase “digital cameras”. Rank highly for this phrase and you will get 1000’s of visitors to your website. But you will get 99% browsers. People who are looking for general material. Someone who is looking to buy will use a search keyword phrase that goes into more detail.
A Longtail Keyword Phrase is a collection of keywords that describe something. For example this is a longtail keyword phrase “canon compact digital cameras”. Now we are getting into the realm of people actually looking for a specific type of cameras and my guess is that these people are one step away from buying a camera and I want them to buy from me.
However, now there is another level of Longtail Keywords. These new keywords are called Buyer Keywords. These keyword phrases take the principal of Longtails to another level.
Buyer Keywords may look like this “new canon powershot A480 digital camera”. How targeted is that! And if your web page has been optimized for that Buyer Keyword, don’t you think you might get a sale? This person know what they want to buy and by using this search term they are now in the final stage and are looking to buy a new canon powershot A480 digital camera.
On Monday I received an email that has changed the way I look at my keyword research.
